A drive to Arlanda along the E4 from south of Stockholm can pick up congestion tax. In Stockholm the tax applies at set times to vehicles driving into or out of the inner city and on Essingeleden, the E4’s route through the city, and the E4 is also the road to Arlanda from central Stockholm.

Sweden’s road charges are camera-based: congestion tax in Stockholm and Gothenburg, and bridge fees on the Skuru bridge and at Sundsvall and Motala. Nothing is paid on the spot. A camera photographs the number plate, the Swedish Transport Agency identifies the owner, whether the car is Swedish or foreign, and a payment notice follows. The Øresund Bridge to Copenhagen works differently: it has a toll station of its own.
