Driving to the airport: United States

Individual states and toll agencies run the tolls in the United States, and their rules differ. Some toll roads and bridges no longer take cash, among them parts of Florida’s Turnpike. A transponder pays as you drive through: E-ZPass is accepted by toll agencies across many states, and some states accept each other’s tags. Without one, many toll roads bill the toll from a photo of the number plate, with an invoice sent by post to the vehicle’s registered owner, though some express or managed lanes accept only a transponder.

Hire cars are usually covered by the rental company’s own toll programme, which charges tolls and its fees to the card used for the rental; terms and fees differ between companies, so ask about them at the desk before driving off. Before acting on a text or email about an unpaid toll, check it on the toll agency’s own website rather than following its links: fake messages of this kind circulate.
